Charming alleyways and historical treasures - welcome to Zug's old town!

A stroll through the old town of Zug is like a journey back in time. Discover historic buildings, small alleyways and charming squares - and enjoy the special flair.

Zug Old Town Market

Personal instead of anonymous. A Schwaz here, a Schwaz there, a wonderfully fragrant espresso in your hand and beaming faces behind the market stalls. This is exactly how shopping should be these days. Surrounded by historic buildings, local farmers sell crisp vegetables, fragrant herbs and freshly baked wood-fired bread.

Zug Old Town

Zug's old town can look back on 800 years of history. Few other Swiss towns have a comparable number of buildings that were erected in the Middle Ages. Every era has left its mark and the Old Town is correspondingly rich in sights. The most famous is undoubtedly the 52-metre-high Zytturm, which was once part of the ring wall and formed the fortified entrance to the old town.

House stories in the old town of Zug

Have you ever wondered what crafts were once practiced in the beautiful buildings of Zug's Old Town?

Landsgemeinde Square

This is where the people of Zug once made their political decisions at the Landsgemeinde. Today, the Landsgemeindeplatz is the meeting place par excellence.

The view of the lake and the sunset is picturesque. The many restaurants and bars around the square are full. The weekly markets on the square bring life. Festivals, celebrations and other events take place here. And the whole of Zug is there! You too?

Rose garden

Behind the main post office rises the mounded Guggi hill. Zug's rose garden is located there, in a prime south-facing position.

The Zug Rose Society plants and cultivates beautiful roses there. Rare and well-known varieties. Historic and modern. All intensely fragrant. The friends bring joy to passers-by. And beautify the town of Zug in a beautiful place.

Kolin Fountain

The fountain dates back to 1541. If only it could talk! It would have a lot to tell.

And he would know exactly who the fountain figure represents. It could be a panner lord. Or another military representative. Or a representative of the Kolin family. The Kolin fountain has been splashing for centuries. But it doesn't speak.

  • Built as a lime tree fountain: 1541
  • Restoration of the fountain: 1747
  • Renewal of the column and statue: 1891-1892
  • Renovation: 1915 and 2019

Greth Schell fountain

The fountain is located opposite the entrance to the Chapel of Our Lady. Its splashing and its location convey a picturesque image. Yet it tells an unpleasant story.

Greth Schell is stooping to carry her drunken husband home. The man is wearing a jester's cap and carrying a rod. Every year on Carnival Monday, the "Guild of Carpenters, Woodturners and Coopers" celebrates the Greth Schell custom. The children receive treats from seven "Lölis".

Sacred buildings Church of St. Michael

St. Michael's Church towers above the town. It is dedicated to the town's patron saint.

The previous church stood even higher up. It had to make way for the new one, which is the largest in the town. The historicist building is reminiscent of earlier stylistic periods. It has a spaciousness that makes you forget the city life
life in the city.

  • Decision by the parish to build a new church: 1891
  • Construction of the new church of St. Michael: 1898-1902
